Oral Surgery & Extractions
Any surgery that’s performed in the mouth and on the jaw is classed as oral surgery. This also includes dental surgery. Treatments such as extractions, implant placement and gum surgery fall within the oral surgery umbrella. At De-ientes Dental, we can carry out oral surgery at our clinic, ensuring that your oral health receives the best treatment possible. While we endeavour to save teeth wherever we can, sometimes we have no choice but to remove teeth that are causing pain and are infected. Oral surgery often is the solution for dental emergencies.
Our approach to all treatment is always to put the patient’s care and comfort first. Many of our patients remark about how at ease and relaxed they were while having surgical treatment. We understand that the prospect of any surgical work is daunting so we do all we can to provide a calm environment so no stresses prevent patients from receiving the treatment they need.

What treatments are classed as oral surgery?
Oral surgery is a very broad area within dentistry and covers any surgical procedure in the mouth. Here are some of the different procedures that are classed as oral surgery:
- Tooth extractions
- Removing impacted wisdom teeth
- Orthognathic surgery
- Placing dental implants
- Sinus lifts and bone grafts
- Removing cysts and abnormal growths
- Frenectomy
- Treating facial and dental trauma following injury
- Treating jaw-related problems
- Removing buried roots and broken teeth
- Periodontics
- Root canal treatment (endodontics)
What’s involved in having an extraction?
Extractions are the most common form of surgical treatment that dentists carry out, sometimes even on a daily basis. It is mostly a very straight-forward procedure and essential for relieving pain. In cases where a tooth can’t be saved, the best course of action is to remove the tooth. Restorative dental treatments can then replace the missing tooth.
Assessment
The decision to opt for an extraction usually happens following from a dental check-up. If a patient has started to experience dental pain, we arrange to see them as soon as possible. A dentist will carry out a thorough assessment to judge whether the tooth can be saved with a filling or root canal treatment. If the damage is too extensive and the tooth is too loose, we will plan for an extraction.
X-rays
Depending on the severity, we may arrange for an x-ray or CBCT scan to check for any other issues. If the damaged tooth is an isolated case, we may skip the x-rays and move onto treatment – especially if the tooth is causing pain.
Simple or Surgical
There are generally two types of extraction. A simple extraction can be carried out if the tooth can be removed without the need for surgery. We can use dental forceps to manoeuvre the tooth out from the socket, keeping it all in one piece. We use local anaesthetic to ensure there is no pain or discomfort.
For larger molars and wisdom teeth, a surgical extraction is the best option. Removing the tooth in parts reduces the impact on the rest of the mouth. This can sometimes be spread across more than one appointment. Again, local anaesthetic is always used.
For nervous patients, we can arrange for sedation.
Aftercare
Extractions take some time to heal. Once the tooth is removed, we cover the socket with gauze. It’s important to allow the socket to clot so it can heal naturally in its own time. There can be some discomfort when the anaesthetic wears off. Over-the-counter painkillers such as paracetamol and ibuprofen can help.
If there are any complications, for example if the socket starts bleeding or the clot in the socket comes out, contact your dentist as soon as possible.
Restoring the missing tooth
The best restorative solution for a missing tooth is a dental implant. We can arrange for an implant to be placed once the original tooth has been removed. Immediate implants have a great success rate and reduce the time where you have a gap in your smile.
We can also use dental bridges and dentures to restore missing teeth.

FAQs & Common Questions
Below are some of the most common questions we receive from patients considering their dental treatment. If you require any further information, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
Many oral surgery procedures are performed under local anaesthesia, which numbs the area being treated and minimises discomfort during the procedure. Additionally, oral surgeons may offer sedation options to help patients feel more relaxed and comfortable during surgery. After the procedure, patients may experience some discomfort, swelling, and bruising, but pain can typically be managed with over-the-counter or prescribed pain medications.
Recovery time can vary depending on the type and complexity of the oral surgery procedure. For minor procedures such as simple tooth extractions, patients may recover within a few days to a week. More extensive procedures, such as dental implant placement or orthognathic surgery, may require several weeks or months for complete recovery. Oral surgeons provide post-operative care instructions to help patients manage pain, swelling, and healing during the recovery period.
Immediately following oral surgery, patients may need to stick to a soft or liquid diet to avoid putting pressure on the surgical site and promote healing. As healing progresses, patients can gradually reintroduce solid foods based on their comfort level and the recommendations of their oral surgeon. It’s essential to avoid hard, crunchy, or spicy foods that may irritate the surgical site or interfere with healing.
Depending on the complexity of the condition, you may need to be referred to a specialist oral surgeon. We can arrange referrals on your behalf if you need specialist care.
The cost of oral surgery can vary depending on factors such as the type of procedure and the complexity of the case. Many oral surgery procedures are covered by dental insurance, but patients should check with their insurance provider to understand their coverage. At De-ientes Dental, we provide 0% finance to help spread the cost of treatment over monthly payments.
