Fissure Sealants
Dental care focuses on prevention from an early age, giving teeth the best chance of remaining healthy and problem-free throughout life. Both milk teeth and adult teeth require dedicated care and attention. Regular brushing at home, alongside routine visits to the dentist, provide the best defence against tooth decay. However, the shape and position of teeth can make it challenging to remove all sugary deposits that may become trapped.
Dental fissures, particularly deep ones, can be problematic as they often serve as breeding grounds for bacteria when food becomes lodged. Cavities in these fissures are a common issue, especially for younger patients. To combat this, we use fissure sealants as an effective measure to prevent decay.

Fissure sealants are thin, plastic coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, particularly the premolars and molars. These teeth have fissures and grooves that make them vulnerable to trapping food particles and bacteria, leading to tooth decay. Fissure sealants act as a protective barrier, sealing off these fissures and preventing food and bacteria from getting trapped in them.
What’s involved in fissure sealant treatment?
1. Preparation
Before applying the sealant, the tooth being sealed will need to be cleaned and dried. The surface of the tooth is thoroughly cleaned so there is no bacteria or plaque, the fissures disinfected. The tooth is isolated so it stays dry during the procedure. The surface is prepared with a solution to help the sealant bond to the enamel.
2. Application & Drying
The sealant is painted onto the surface of the tooth once it is dried and prepared. The dentist will make sure that there is adequate cover and that the fissures are properly sealed. The sealant is then hardened using a UV lamp.
3. Check-up
Treating a single molar or premolar only takes a few minutes. Once the sealant is dry, the dentist will make sure the bond is secure. The sealant should last five to ten years, protecting the fissures and providing a reliable protective measure against decay.

FAQs & Common Questions
Below are some of the most common questions we receive from patients considering their dental treatment. If you require any further information, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
Fissure sealants are typically recommended for children and teenagers as soon as their permanent molars and premolars erupt. However, adults with deep fissures in their teeth and a higher risk of cavities can also benefit from fissure sealants.
Fissure sealants are long-lasting but not permanent. They can last for several years with proper care and maintenance. Over time, they may wear down or become damaged from chewing and grinding, requiring reapplication.
Fissure sealants do not require special care beyond regular oral hygiene practices. Patients should continue to brush their teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, floss daily, and attend regular dental check-ups. Avoiding excessively hard or sticky foods can help prolong the life of the sealants.
While fissure sealants provide a protective barrier against cavity-causing bacteria, they do not guarantee complete prevention of cavities. Proper oral hygiene and dietary habits are still essential for maintaining oral health. However, fissure sealants significantly reduce the risk of cavities in sealed teeth compared to unsealed teeth.
On top of good oral hygiene and dental care habits, regular trips to the dentist are the best combination for preventing decay and gum disease. To help strengthen young teeth, we can offer fluoride varnishes to give an extra defence.
