Who Can Benefit from Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is ideal for patients who:

  • Experience dental anxiety or phobia
  • Have a strong gag reflex
  • Require extensive or complex dental procedures
  • Have difficulty sitting still for long periods
  • Have a low pain threshold or heightened sensitivity

What Types of Sedation Are Available?

We offer different levels of sedation tailored to your comfort and treatment requirements:

  • Inhalation Sedation (Laughing Gas) – A mild sedative inhaled through a mask, helping you relax while remaining fully conscious.
  • Oral Sedation – A prescribed sedative pill taken before treatment to induce a deeper state of relaxation.
  • IV Sedation – Administered through a vein, offering a more profound sedative effect while allowing you to remain responsive.

What to Expect During Sedation

1. Initial Consultation & Assessment

Before your appointment, you’ll meet with your dentist to discuss your medical history, level of anxiety, and suitability for IV sedation. Your dentist will explain the process in detail and ensure it’s the right option for your needs. You’ll also receive instructions about eating, drinking, and medication use prior to the procedure.

2. Preparing for the Appointment

On the day of your treatment, you’ll need someone to accompany you to and from the appointment, as you won’t be able to drive afterward. You should arrive wearing comfortable clothing and having followed all pre-sedation guidelines given by the dental team.

3. Administering the IV Sedation

Once you’re settled in the treatment chair, a small cannula (thin plastic tube) will be gently inserted into a vein, usually in your arm or the back of your hand. The sedative medication is then delivered through this line, helping you enter a deeply relaxed, drowsy state while still remaining responsive.

4. Monitoring Throughout the Procedure

Throughout the treatment, your vital signs, including blood pressure, oxygen levels, and heart rate, are continuously monitored to ensure your safety. You’ll feel completely at ease and may not remember much (or anything) about the procedure afterward.

5. Recovery & Aftercare

After the procedure, you’ll be moved to a recovery area where the team will monitor you as the sedative wears off. Most patients feel drowsy for a few hours afterward. Once you’re alert and stable, your companion can take you home.

6. Post-Treatment Instructions

You’ll be given clear aftercare instructions, including what to eat, when to take any medications, and how to manage mild soreness. You should rest for the remainder of the day and avoid driving, alcohol, or operating machinery for 24 hours.

FAQs & Common Questions

Below are some of the most common questions we receive from patients considering their dental treatment. If you require any further information, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Sedation dentistry uses medication to help patients feel calm, relaxed, and comfortable during dental procedures. It’s especially helpful for those with dental anxiety, a strong gag reflex, or a fear of needles or drills.

It’s ideal for:

  • Nervous or anxious patients
  • Patients with past traumatic dental experiences
  • Those undergoing complex or lengthy treatments
  • People with a sensitive gag reflex or difficulty staying still

Children or adults with special needs

Common types include:

  • Inhalation sedation (gas and air) – A mix of oxygen and nitrous oxide breathed through a nose mask to help you feel relaxed and slightly light-headed.
  • Oral sedation – A tablet taken before your appointment to reduce anxiety.

IV sedation – A deeper form of conscious sedation delivered through a vein. You stay awake but very relaxed, and may not remember much of the procedure.

Not usually. Most dental sedation is conscious sedation, meaning you’re awake but deeply relaxed. IV sedation can make you feel drowsy enough that you don’t remember the procedure, but you’ll still be able to respond if needed.

Yes, sedation dentistry is very safe when carried out by trained professionals. Your vital signs will be closely monitored throughout treatment to ensure your safety and comfort.

Recovery time depends on the type of sedation used. Inhalation sedation wears off quickly, often allowing you to resume normal activities the same day. IV and oral sedation take longer to wear off, so you’ll need someone to escort you home and rest for the remainder of the day.

For IV or oral sedation, you’ll usually be advised not to eat or drink for a few hours before your appointment. Your dentist will give you personalised instructions during your pre-treatment consultation.

No. Sedation helps reduce anxiety and discomfort, and you’ll also be given a local anaesthetic to numb the treatment area, so you remain pain-free during the procedure.

Yes, children can be safely treated with sedation, particularly inhalation sedation (gas and air). Your dentist will assess whether it’s suitable based on your child’s age, medical history, and treatment needs.

Sedation may be available on the NHS for children or adults with high dental anxiety or complex needs, but availability varies by location and clinical criteria. Private practices typically offer a wider range of sedation options without long waiting times.
